Today’s post follows this post. Which was inspired by the same writing prompt regarding rioting in Stormwind mentioned in our last post’s intro. We join Lore as she heads out into the chaos with Lyestra to try and keep the University entrance clear.

Loreli gestured Lyestra to the canal side doors. That was the entrance Aely had indicated to the guards and the entrance she wanted to address first. After that she’d planned to circle back around and check the other door for anyone attempting legitimate access from that side. She had expected chaos and violence, what she hadn’t expected was the small pack of guards completely surrounded by angry rioters. There didn’t seem to be a Captain among them. Yet, while they had managed to stay organized, the rioters threatened to pick them off, one by one. She turned her head to shout at Lyestra over the noise but the other woman was gone.

Swearing under her breath, Loreli scanned the crowd, but saw no sign of the warrior. How do you loose a woman her size anyway? The rogue slipped both daggers from their sheaths, tucking the blades against her inner arm, preparing to use the hilts to subdue. As few casualties as possible on her end would suit just fine. She took one last look over the horde of people crowding the street, trying to spot any sign of Lyestra. When none presented itself she waded into the fray.

The rioters, not expecting to be fallen on from behind parted easily enough. Loreli reached the surrounded guards just as another contingent came in from the Trade District bridge. Suddenly faced with even odds, and armed even odds at that, the rioters scattered, leaving at least this street blissfully quiet. Though horrible sounds carried with the smell of smoke and death from other parts of the city.

“Can you hold the entrance until I get back?” Loreli asked, as the guards debriefed and regrouped.

The Captain turned to look at her, “Ma’am, the city is burning and the rioting is out of control. We need to head back out there.”

“Look, we’ve got a safe place for wounded and healers to help them. But if this door gets overrun again, there’ll be no way in. Give me ten minutes? If I’m not back you can go on your merry way. Yes?” Loreli folded her arms over her chest as she awaited a response.

The Captain shook his head and picked five guards from the group, “Stay here and keep this area clear. If she’s not back in 10 minutes on the dot, come find us.” His chosen men and women nodded and scattered themselves along the street and around the entrance.

Loreli swept a short bow, “My thanks.” Then she turned and headed off in search of Lyestra.

The Trade District was in a shambles. Really though, that was putting it lightly. Loreli couldn’t believe how extensive the destruction was. She ducked as a still flaming torch flew by her head and smelt singed hair. A hand grabbed her and dragged her into an alley between two the shops by the east canal exit.

She stared incredulously, “Jaylen?! What are you doing?!”

“Pulling you out of an angry mob of Sevens and crazies!” He snarled.

“Same thing.” Loreli muttered, “Why’s SI:7 out there?”

“Shaw was stabbed. We’ve been told to make our presence felt.”

“Stabbed? Not dead?” Loreli asked.

Jaylen eyed her, it was all the confirmation she needed.

“Damn.” She swore.

Jaylen scowled.

“Jaylen, please, pull Seven back. You have the authority.” Loreli insisted. “Too many innocent people will die if some control isn’t taken soon. Do you really want the city guard to upstage Seven?”

He was watching past her as the trade district burned. It cast an eerie orange glow on his face and turned his hair green.

“What do I get out of it?” He asked.

“Security in the knowledge that you’re not a complete /prick/?”

Jaylen didn’t look amused.

“Look, internal Seven political bull shit aside…” She glanced over her shoulder, the mob was getting worse, “I have to find Lyestra and get back to the University in just under… five minutes.” She turned to leave.

Jaylen caught her arm again, “I’m not letting you out of my sight. We have unfinished business.”

“Then you’d better keep up!”

Guardians and Revelations Pt. 2

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Today’s post is a continuation of yesterday’s from Zhaane and leads into a response to the prompt from the WFR boards; Writing Assignment: Riot in Stormwind

Guardians and Revelations – Part II

“I’m a busy man, Mr. a’Falkyr,” his pronounciation was impeccable. Zha’ane felt guilty about using his Kaldorei Intelligence papers in order to gain an audience with High Commander Wyrmbane, but in his judgement, it needed to be done. “And I also don’t enjoy being used a somekind of a pawn in someone elses power stuggles.” Zha’ane nodded and wisely kept his mouth shut.

The High Commander turned and picked up a small stack of papers and a fairly thick personnel folder. “This… this is a disaster waiting to happen,” he said as he waved the papers in the night elf’s direction. “She’s being setup, and from all accounts, it looks like it’s from her own side.”

“Sir, I can’t go into details, all I can say is that her mother only just found out she had become a Deathknight, and now she’s gone without a trace. If she’s here, I’d like to be able to reassure her mother somehow that she is being taken care of,” pleaded Zha’ane.

“Oh, she’s here alright! It was like seeing a ghost come back to haunt us when she reported in last night. I can understand Ms. Tymara’s concerns, as we only just recently sent home her personal effects. And from what you’ve stated, as well as my collegues in the Fjord have reported to me, the only thing that adds up is a personal vendetta of some sort. And we don’t appreciate being used in this fashion.” Zha’ane looked at the Commander questioningly.

The commander noticed the look, “Someone wants her out of the way, and they are willing to falsify intelligence estimates and setup ambushes along routes of travel to make sure she doesn’t come back. What they didn’t count on is that she is quite a talented young lady in her own right, and our ability to assess a situation and respond in kind.” This was news to Zha’ane, but he waited for the commander to elaborate. None came. Instead, he turned to his operations officer, “Commander Windstryke. Where is Sergeant Woods now?”

“She should be with the Urik. Airlift duty, Sir.” came the reply after a brief search of the personnel schedule.

“Sergeant?” Asked Zha’ane, pleasantly surprised.

“You should have seen the report by Vice Admiral Keller. That’s one very talented young lady, and even her… new disposition hasn’t changed that.” Zha’ane seemed to be hearing this a lot. The pride in his student had never been higher! “Please, come with me,” Wyrmbane requested. They walked a short distance to where a civilian was being offloaded carefully from the back of an Armored Gryphon. The civilian was thanking the gryphon rider as she was preparing for another flight out. “Sergeant!” he bellowed. “Front and Center!”

Channi’s head snapped around at the sound of his voice as she rushed around the gryphon and saluted the approaching High Commander. There was a tall male Kaldorei that accompanied him who seemed… familiar, but she did not know why.

Zha’ane’s surprise at seeing his student as a deathknight was almost too much to conceal. She looked a bit more pale than he remembered, but that could be a trick of the light from the torches. Her softly glowing eyes did not flicker in the least when she saw him; a fact that did not go unnoticed by him. But all in all, she seemed to be healthy and in good spirits.

“Sgt. Woods, status.” Wyrmbane ordered.

“Sir. There are three more Civilians that I have spotted and require airlift from the village below,” came her reply.

“And this one here was how many you have recovered today?”

“She was my 7th one, sir”

The High Commander nodded. “Sergeant, have Urik take your Mount, and then meet me in the Map Room. You have a change of orders coming.”

“But sir, the civilians…”

“You can supply their whereabouts to Urik, and he will dispatch another rider take care of them. That is all.” And he turned about and strode off. Zha’ane watched the exchange and noted Channi’s reluctance to leave another person in need of assistance. It made him even more proud than he already was. With a nod and a smile at the young sergeant, he turned and followed the High Commander.

“Mr. a’Falkyr. We need more soldiers like her out here. Her kind doesn’t come around that often. But we also don’t want to have the distinction of having to notify next of kin TWICE. Especially for one so young.” Channi came rushing in the door at this point and stood at attention awaiting to be recognized. Wyrmbane shifted his gaze from the Night Elf to her. “Sergeant Woods. It is my understanding that there is a Kaldorei reconnassience group being formed that can use your talents. I am turning you over to this man here, indefinitely. You are free to return here as time allows but the mission of your new primary objectives are to remain secret and will not be relayed to me, or anyone else for that matter. Am I understood?”

“Yes, sir!” came her reply.

“Very well then. Pack up. You are heading home again.”

Again, surprise was not a word to be used lightly when describing a Deathknight. So when her glowing eyes blinked, it was plain to all that ‘the logic of her new orders eluded her’. “Sir…?”

Zha’ane understood what was happening at once. “Officially, you are being attached to a covert unit in service to Kaldorei Intelligence. You will report to me directly from here on out. Unofficially, I am taking you home, to your mother.” He smiled warmly at the girl… no… young woman, in front of him. It was going to be hard to change his point of view about her. It was almost alarming how quickly humans could grow into adulthood.

That smile…. she KNEW she had seen it before, but couldn’t for the life of her remember where or when. The confusion was apparent on her face, not only for the orders, but also from the recognition of this other person. But she accepted her orders and saluted at the two of them before turning to leave.

Zha’ane turned to the Commander, “Sir…”

Wyrmbane shook his concern away, “I know. I didn’t want to accept her when she first came to us. She was too young, and I knew it was too dangerous. But the recommendation came from SI:7, so I gave her a chance. She exceeded our hopes when she came to us, but in the end it was her youth and inexperience that killed her.” Zha’ane looked at him questioningly before he carried on. “We continued our investigations and it was an Ebon Knight that brought this to our attention,” he pointed to a display case on the wall that held a necklace. It was quite a beautiful necklace and it seemed to glow slightly. Zha’ane caught himself as he almost took a step toward it. “You see the power it has?” the Commander continued. “It is designed to make you WANT to put it on. But it’s cursed. It will kill you and teleport you to one of their camps for ‘processing.’ It’s the only explanation that we could find that fit her circumstances. Now we keep that on on display as a reminder and a lesson to those heading into the field for the first time.”

That explained the spell damage on the locket he found. He looked back to the High Commander,”You said, indefinitely…?”

“Yes. As talented as she is, we… I … want her to have a chance at having a life of her own. If that’s even possible for a Deathknight. As I said, she is free to come back as time allows, but I want her to experience life some more. I want her to be able to choose this path for herself. Is that understood?”

Zha’ane nodded at the decision

“You’ve come quite a way just to track down a lost little girl, Mr. a’Falkyr. She’s one of us. I trust you will take care of her as you would your own.” This was a statement. He held out his hand to shake the Night Elf’s.

“Yes, sir. Thank you,” Zha’ane said as he shook the High Commander’s hand.

A half hour later, once Channi had gathered her gear and Mount, a 7th Legion staff Mage opened a Portal to Stormwind for them. Zha’ane and Channi both saluted the High Commander and the Mage as they passed through the portal…

***

… and into chaos! The bottle of Snowplum Brandy that Zhan’ane had brought back, crashed onto the floor as he and Channi narrowly missed being hit by crossing bolts of energy in the Mage tower by dueling mages and warlocks. Zha’ane pulled Channi down and toward a wall for protection as her charger reared up and raced toward the door. Channi instictively put up an anti-magic shield that deflected more than one set of Shadow bolts directed at them. They took refuge behind a fallen table that another mage was using for cover as well.

“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!?!” Zha’ane demanded.

The mage seemed to be breathing heavily and was clutching an arm that appered to have suffered some form of magical damage. “Riots… Some prisoner was let go… riots erupted… Warlocks attacked… city is *cough*” That was enough for Zha’ane. Channi’s charger made it out the door and he could hear the chaos coming from the stairwell. There was a slight lull in the fighting as the steed barrelled through the oncoming Warlocks and demon spawn.

He glanced at Channi who had already pulled her Battle Axe and was preparing for the next course of action. “How often can you use that shield?”

“I can use it again shortly. What do you have in mind?” she replied.

“When I give the signal, I want you to run headlong down those stairs and I’ll meet you outside. Got it?”

She nodded. “Wait… what’s the signal?”

Zha’ane just smiled and then seemed to shimmer into the shadows. “You’ll know it, trust me!”

Channi’s Charger must have made it out of the tower as there were more sounds of demons approaching from the stairwell. 3 Fel-hounds and a Fel-guard came up next. The demonic dog-like creatures searching for magic users, and the taller fel-guard was there for physical protection. As they cleared the doorway, the Fel-hounds pounced on the nearest of the mages… only to be frozen in place as the mages blinked away. There was a puff of smoke behind the Fel-guard as it reared up in agony. Zha’ane had popped up and attacked it viciously from behind. Apparently this was the Signal…

Channi jumped up as the Fel-guard turned on Zha’ane, and buried her Axe in it’s back and watched it crumple to the floor. Zha’ane smiled and allowed her to take the lead down the stairs. As soon as she saw Warlocks, she was again encompassed by a field of anti-magic as she barreled through them. Zha’ane was close behind and left a cloud of blinding powder in his wake. They didn’t want to kill the warlocks, just incapacitate them so they could get out.

And out they made it to fresh air… or not… The air was rancid with smoke and fire. Spells were flying everywhich way across the courtyard. Zha’ane tugged on Channi’s cloak to get her attention and pointed down. She nodded in response and they jumped into the nearby tree to get down to the ground. A few broken branches and scrapes and bruises later, they were able to gather their bearings. They hadn’t even had a chance to think of where to go next. Just to get out of the tower…

It was at that point Zha’ane could tell the magnitude of the damage being done to the city. The sky in the direction of the Cathedral was filled with a huge plume of crimson smoke. the sounds fromt he market District were getting louder as well. It was almost as if the city were being culled by it’s own citizens. For the moment,t hey were safe, but the tree only provided so much protection. Zha’ane could hide in the shadows, but Channi was another matter. He had to keep her safe. Where to go…? Loreli was security at the University, surely she would have somewhere for them to go to… LORELI! Where was she? was she alright? “We need to get to the Campus! Follow Me!” he called over the sounds of battle around them. Channi nodded in agreement and followed close behind.

He wasn’t sure where to find her once he got there, but he was sure he’d find a way. But first thing’s first…

Guardians and Revelations – Pt. 1

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Today, we do a little back-tracking so we can move forward. Today’s post comes to you from Zhaane and starts off shortly after this post…

Surprise is not a word that death knights are accustomed to having associated with their reactions. So for her sake, let’s just say that ‘Channi was not expecting to be presented a dress by Nivista.’ But here she was in the back of the Pig & Whistle exchanging her heavy plate armor for a blue gossamer dress that just seemed to flow around her body. It was not an unpleasant feeling, she had to admit. How does one wear only this into combat? she wondered to herself. But the druid was right about it being more comfortable than her armor. And there was something else… she felt… happy? Yes… that had to be it. She had an uncontrollable urge to… smile as she smoothed the fabric around the curves of her body.

She came out from the backroom smiling, but also turning slightly red as she also realized that she felt very exposed without her armor, and that made her very self conscious. Nivista And Takani both smiled at her as she appeared around the bar. Others in the tavern looked at her and gave her approving smiles as well. Somehow, this small act seemed to comfort her and she grew more confident in her situation. “Thank you, again,” she said to Nivista. “It feels… nice.” The almost mechanical quality of her voice giving away the unfamiliarity of expressing herself.

“Now, isn’t that more comfortable than your armor?” Nivista smiled as she asked this.

“Yes, it is. Have you seen Loreli? I’d like to show her.”

Takani responded, “She went outside with Tuivae, but didn’t come back with her.”

Channi’s brow wrinkled as the only two logical options came to her: She should still be outside, or she went somewhere else “I’ll see if I can find her then. Thank you again for the dress, it really is…” she had to pause a moment to make sure the word fit the occasion, “…beautiful.” She smiled and nodded in affirmation that she was indeed using the correct word. Beauty is not something death knights that have been newly freed are inclined to notice, let alone enjoy. Those things take time. Enjoyment of anything was still something she was trying to get used to. She smiled again as she gathered her belongings and *Clomp clomp clomped* out of the tavern. Apparently, her armored boots were the only shoes she had…!

Wearing a dress while riding her charger proved to be more difficult than she anticipated. In the end, she just pulled the hem up to mid-thigh so she could straddle the mount properly as she headed through the city looking for signs of Loreli. She really didn’t have any idea where she could be, so she went to the University to check if she went home for the night. However, she wasn’t exactly sure where Loreli lived, and no one seemed to be willing to help her, so she soon gave up finding her there. Perhaps she wanted to pick something up from the Market District? Plausible. And right now it was about the only other thing that made sense. But at this time of night, most of the district was closed and there was no sign of her.

Being as late as it was, a different type of clientelle seemed to be roaming the market, and it made her very aware of all the stares she was receiving. Why are they whistling like that? she asked herself. It made her wish she had her armor back on, but she wanted to show the dress to Loreli first. However, it did not seem that would happen tonight, so she headed back to her barracks in Old Town. As she dismounted at the gate, she took no notice of the men coming out of the barracks next door. There was always some kind of traffic heading in or out of there and there was never any trouble, they were sister agencies after all. She gathered her gear and allowed the stable hand to take her steed as she headed inside for the night. She could always show the dress to Loreli tomorrow night.

***

“Mmmhmmm, tasty… even for a death knight.” Said Drin as he watched the young death knight slip inside the Barracks next door. The flash of thigh as she dismounted was enough to spark more than his share of interest.

“I told you before, she’s off limits,” Said Jaylen. “At least until we have Loreli under control again. Then you can do with her what you wish.” Jaylen wasn’t too fond of humans for what he knew Drin had in mind. No, humans were too fragile.

Drin on the other hand, relished the fragile nature of humans, and the fact that she was young… AND a death knight… He just smiled at the prospect. He could wait. As long as he had to, and then he could see where the breaking point of a death knight was. Yes… that would be MOST enjoyable…

Jaylen knew that even being adopted, Loreli would still instictively fight to protect, or avenge her daughter if anything were to happen to her directly. No, he’d just have to get her out of the way. Again. Maybe this time, she’ll have the decency to STAY dead…

***

Channi had new orders posted the next morning. She hadn’t finished her investigations into the new Defias leadership yet, but someone in her upper command felt she was better utilized in Northrend. She was to take the 0800 Tram to Ironforge, where she would catch a flight to Menethil, so she could be on the icebreaker Northspear for the 1200 voyage to Howling Fjord. Once there, she would report to Vice Admiral Keller at Valguard Keep to receive further orders. She was to “Pack Lightly” as she would be issued new equipment upon her arrival.

Not that she had much to bring with her anyway, but she left her armor in her foot locker and had it placed in storage at the barracks. If she needed to, she could have it shipped seperately. This gave her an excuse to wear the dress again, which made her smile.

Unfortunately, she wouldn’t have a chance to see Loreli before she left. And she was under strict orders to not tell anyone where she was going. Hopefully she could write to her later and let her know she was fine.

When she disembarked from the Northspear in Valguard, she was regretting her choice of clothing. The chill air seemed to wind it’s way around her legs, bare under the dress she wore. But it wasn’t long from the point she reported for duty to when she was issued her new Cobalt Armor set. Not only was it stronger and more manueverable than her old set, but it was fabricated with the temperatures of Northrend in mind, so there was a warm, soft fur lining as well. It wasn’t as comfortable as the dress, but felt almost… luxurious compared to the armors she used in Outland, and a good deal warmer too! The scourge would never had made anything that felt like this. Comfort was not something that was required of the armors fabricated by them. Only utility.

She stopped a moment realizing she was now comparing craftsmanship between the Alliance and the Scourge… Creativity was not something the Scourge encouraged because it also breeded independant thought. But the Alliance, and Horde as well, revelled in creativity. Just look at all the Gnome and Goblin technology. It was amazing the amount of creativity those two races alone could have. Maybe that was what makes them all fight so hard against the Scourge… a need to be creative and independant? She would have to think about that more in the future. For now, she had orders to fulfill.

In true military fashion, it was a game of ‘Hurry up, and Wait.’ By the time she was done getting re-equiped, it was time for the evening meal, and then lights out.

It was the next morning she was immediately sent off to Utgarde Keep for what was supposed to be a quick recon sweep, but turned into a full scale battle. There wasn’t supposed to be any Vrykul about…. at least not in these numbers, but her keen eyes picked out what could have been termed Perimeter Guard Elements and Death Gripped them to her own patrol group and took them out one by one. By the time her patrol worked their way around the perimeter of the enemy units, and through the Keep itself, the Vrykul command staff had no warning that they were under attack.

Upon their return, to say Vice Admiral Keller was surprised at their report would be an understatement. They had it from on high at SI:7 that there should be no Vrykul forces of that magnitude in the vicinity any longer. He thanked them for their report, and ordered them to clean up and get some chow. In the mean time, he’d let SI:7 know how full of Shoveltusk Fertilizer their estimates were. Again…!

As much as he would have preferred to have her stay, he received further orders sending her to Winterguard leaving that afternoon. If she hurried, she might make it to Westguard by nightfall, and then on to Winterguard the next evening. When she reported in as ready to leave, Vice Admiral Keller seemed to want to say something more to her, but instead just returned her salute and sent her on her way. He had taken the liberty to have a patrol sent on ahead to make sure the road was clear for her. She noted passing them on their return trip about halfway to Winterguard, but they seemed to have been in a fight. This caused her concern. Again, something new Deathknights were not used to. But they saluted her as they passed her and gave her the all clear as they continued on their way.

It was shortly after nightfall when she saw the lights in the watch towers as she came over the last rise. She pulled her steed to a stop as she approached the gate. Her glowing eyes made it clear to the guards that she was a deathknight. He examined her orders and looked up at her, “Cpl. Woods? Captain Adams is expecting you in the keep. Through the gate and to the left once you are past the Flightmaster tier. The stables are on your right. Welcome to Westguard!”

She saluted the guard and thanked him as she was allowed to proceed. She found the stables and took care of her charger first. Once she was comfortable with his care, she reported to Captain Adams. The dwarven commander seemed to pause in his tracks when he looked up at the young woman standing at attention in front of him. He glanced at a message on the table and back at her. “Stand a’ ease, Corporal.” He looked her up and down as he came around the planning table to stand in front of her. As small and young as she was, there was a confidence in her movements and stature that spoke volumes about her abilities in the field. Captain Adams seemed impressed.

“It seems ye’ have had qui’ a day today,” this was a statement, not a question. ” Ye’ would pro’ably be wantin’ t’ get yer’self a bunk ‘ere in th’ barracks. I’ll ‘ave a few things fer ye’ t’ do in th’ mornin’. Come back t’ me after ye’ have ‘ad some breakfast. Oh, and be advised, th’ Inn is off limits t’ death knights. Ye’ll have t’ stay in the barracks and eat in th’ mess hall ‘ere in th’ keep.” He gave her a half shrug and his voice seemed genuinely sorry.

Channi nodded, stood back at attention and saluted, “Yes, Sir.” He returned her salute and turned back to the planning table. She performed an about face and left to find a bed for the evening and see if there was anything leftover from supper in the mess hall.

***

“Someone ‘s playin’ a dangerous game with tha’ girl. An’ there’s only so much help we ca’ give ‘er…” Captain Adams said half to himself as he watched her leave the conference room.

“Sir?” asked an aide.

The Captain seemed to think a moment and then looked at his aide, “I wan’ a patrol gathered in th’ morning t’ check out th’ road to Winterguard. An’ I wan’ a priority message sent t’ Wyrmbane a’ once,” he ordered as he bent over to pen the message to High Commander Wyrmbane. He included the original message from Vice Admiral Keller and the report from the Valguard patrol when they arrived at Westguard before their return. I can only delay her for so long, and the rest will be Light willing…

***

“I can’t thank ye’ enough f’r gettin’ me mules back,” exclaimed Abby. “I know ye canno’ go in th’ Inn here, so I took th’ liberty of gettin’ ye’ a spot o’ shoveltusk sausage. Almos’ as good as home!”

“Thank you,” Channi said politely as she took a bite and smiled. This was actually quite good. Variety, she thought to herself. Again, the variety of even the foods she has eaten was enough to make her think of how much her world had changed. And again, it was not an unpleasant experience.

“Now, be off with ye’. I’m sure Cap’n Adams has somethin’ more importan’ fer ye’ to be doin’,” Abby said as she ‘shooed’ her away with a smile.

Channi actually found herself amused and almost giggled as she was chased away toward the keep. She gave the dwarven explorer a brief smile and a nod as she continued to eat the sausage on her way across the courtyard. She made sure she was done eating before she entered the conference room and stood at attention awaiting to be recognized by the Captain. When he did call her forward he seemed hesitant to do so. His aide came forward and handed an envelope to Channi and went back to his desk on the side of the room.

“Corporal Woods. Ye’ ‘ave yer’ orders there. Good Luck t’ ye’,” he said as he reached out a hand to shake hers with.

She blinked and hesitated, and slowly reached out to shake his hand in return. “Thank you, sir.” She then stepped back and fired off a salute and headed off to the hallway where she read her orders. She was to report to Winterguard Keep in the Dragonblight as soon as she could. She went outside and looked at the sun, low on the southern horizon. Even leaving now, she wouldn’t get there until after nightfall, but orders were orders. She gathered her gear from the barracks and gave one last wave to Abby on her way out of the gates.

Stay tuned as we continue tomorrow.
